PortomarÃn is located on the right bank of the river Miño.
The ancient city, consisting of two districts, San Nicolas and San Pedro, is submerged in the reservoir of Belesar.
The current village was built in 1960.
PortomarÃn was an important step in place of the Middle Ages with a large bridge and hospital, all came under the waters of the Miño.
The great church of St. Nicolas Fortress, built by the monks, knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in the twelfth century, was dismantled stone by stone to be rebuilt in the plaza of the new settlement.
For his monumental, rich sculptural elements and magnificence, is one of the most interesting examples of Romanesque Lugo.
The facade of the Romanesque church of San Pedro, who also moved to one end of town (next to the Pazo de Berbetoros XVII) is beautiful bill.
La Capilla de la Virgen de las Nieves is currently mounted on an arc of the old medieval bridge.
